Movie Review – Pocahontas

It’s such a random movie to watch at this age but I had only ever read the book. I couldn’t really remember the details so decided to abandon my imagination and watch it happen instead.

Pocahontas is possibly the only Disney Princess movie you get as close to reality as possible because it didn’t have a ‘happy’ ending as the others. Happy, being in inverted commas because both protagonists managed to stop the fight that was about to erupt but they didn’t get their happy ending.

I’m questioning myself right now, ‘who makes reviews on Disney movies?!’ I suppose I just felt really sad by the ending that I wanted to tell everyone about it. The norm of a Disney Princess Movie has always been that the male and female get together that the ending saddened me.  However recent Movies don’t actually abide by the unsaid rule (I suppose it is a rule).

Take for example, Brave – Princess Merida doesn’t even have a Prince, I lied she had 3 options but I wouldn’t really consider them options more like obligatory husband choices. The movie itself was based on the relationship between a mother and daughter - man not needed.

Back to Pocahontas, so if anyone doesn’t know the movie is based on an actually lady called Pocahontas, obviously. In the movie she’s 18, and really beautiful, as is any other princess. In reality her age is unknown because it happened one to many centuries ago. The movie however follows the same/similar story that is told by history.

In a nutshell – Pocahontas and John Smith fall in love but due to the controversies of the society during the day and era both of them find themselves in between a war, where he sustains an injury and must return to his own homeland to receive medical help. Thus the pair says their farewells and must give-up their short-lived love.

In terms of the romantic side of things, the ending was pretty much tragic but if we look from a different angle at least there wasn’t a war?

It was great because I loved how she was able to run around barefoot in the grass and dive of cliffs into the clear water…you can’t do that in London unless you want to look like a lunatic & there is definitely no clear water around. The freedom she had was enviable and her knowledge was impeccable – she was basically one with nature.

This isn't suicide...it's courage.

Personally if I watched this movie as a child, the ending would have traumatised me because my undeveloped mind would always see the optimistic side of life. I would have convinced myself that he swam back to her and managed to magically heal. The reality being he probably lost a lot of blood and hence died on his way to England.

Tragedy aside, it’s definitely a great movie so if you haven’t watch it, go ahead and do so.
